Bastille Day

Bastille Day is a French holiday celebrated on July 14 marking the anniversary of the fall of Bastille in France in 1789. Let me explain what it means 🐒

Bastille is actually a French fortress, which came to be used as a French prison. The Bastille had come to symbolize the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy. A lot of political prisoners and ordinary citizens were held there.

During the unrest of 1789, on July 14 a mob approached the Bastille to demand the arms and ammunition stored there, and, when the forces guarding the structure resisted, the attackers captured the prison and released the seven prisoners held there. The taking of the Bastille signaled the beginning of the French Revolution.

  • speeches — what can you do, everybody enjoys a great discourse, especially when there's an excellent historical reason for that 🎈
  • military parades — one of the most spectacular parts accompanied by French flags and music, it certainly manages to display French power 🏰
  • “Vive le 14 juillet!” (“Long live the 14th of July!”) — no comments here 🙂
  • singing, dancing, and drumming performances — loud and proud, French culture is flourishing 🥁
