The day of the Dead

Day of the Dead is a prehispanic tradition celebrated on November 1 and 2 that is dedicated to the memory of those who are no longer with us. It originates from Mexico, where it is widely celebrated in such regions, as Cuernavaca, Morelos and others. Apart from Mexico, you can come across it in Belize, Ecuador, and Bolivia.

The idea behind this holiday is that death and other things that are upsetting at first glance, can be celebrated with life, dancing, music, and food. It's not necessary to cry about your grandma (although you certainly will), when you can smile and commemorate the good memories of her with festivity and respectful traditions.

Here are the most exciting activities that you need to try:

  • dress up as a skeleton 💀🎉, because this mythological creature symbols death, and its pics are everywhere, in a serious or funny sense. plus, it's very common to do bold and colourful make-up for this holiday, just like on Halloween.
  • make an altar of the dead; the thing is that spirits 👻 come back to our world in order to spend the holiday with their families and try the food and other stuff the family members prepare for them, so your altar should have food, drinks, and some personal belongings that will attract their owner.
  • cook a lot of food, you'll need it for your relatives, alive and dead, and for yourself too, as no holiday passes without traditional dishes.
