Parenthesis is used in writing to introduce explanations, comments, additions, and especially detachment constructions. According to stylistics, detachment is usually a word or a phrase that interrupts the original utterance in order to introduce some extra information. Due to the pause and stress that detachment creates, the text gains more authentic touch of human speech.
Apart from that, parenthesis may convey the author's point of view, sarcasm, contemplation, and side notes.
The symbol didn't become a punctuation mark right away. At first, it appeared in mathematics and logic. Then it started to be used in science, and only after that it got involved in typography.
The middle flattened left bracket is used in the same way as any other semicircular operator type bracket. It is usually called the opening one and is used together with the closing one – right ❫ .
