Beschreibung

The Meitei script, or Meetei Mayek, was used from the 11th-12th centuries to the 18th century to write the Meitei language, spoken in Manipur in northeastern India, as well as in neighboring states, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. It was replaced by  The Bengali script  0985–09CD , but attempts to revive it began in the mid-20th century. In 1976, several letters were added to represent sounds that appeared in the language after the script had been created. Since the 1980s, it has been taught in schools.

The letters of the Meetei Mayek alphabet are named after parts of the human body.
