Medium Left Parenthesis Ornament ❨
Symbol Meaning
Round parenthesis appeared back in the 16th century, when more complex mathematical operations started to require new signs. At first, this symbol was spread in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), then it moved on and appeared in writing and programming languages. Nowadays you can easily find it in physical and chemical formulas, books and texts of any genre, and, of course, in smiles like :)
The middle left bracket from Unicode is usually the opening one, used in conjunction with the right one — ❩ . Among the dingbats there are other brackets, for example, bold ❪ , ❫ or panzer-like, with two breaks — ❲ , ❳ .
The symbol “Medium Left Parenthesis Ornament” is included in the “Ornamental brackets” subblock of the “Dingbats” block and was approved as part of Unicode version 3.2 in 2002.
