Typographical eight-pointed sprockets are used for text formatting. Put them instead of headers, or instead of letters in swear words. This asterisk is not for a footnote because it stands in the middle of a line, not at the top: ✳.
Сharacter derived from set of glyphs the ITC Zapf Dingbats series 100.
The symbol “Eight-Spoked Asterisk” is included in the “Stars and asterisks” subblock of the “Dingbats” block and was approved as part of Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. In 2015, it was also approved as an Emoji in version 1.0 and added to the “Other Symbols” subcategory of the “Symbols” category.
