Symbol Meaning

Lambda — the 11th letter of the Greek alphabet (also used in Coptic). In the Ionian number system matched, it meant 30. It originated from the Phoenician letter Lamd. Numerous letters originated from the lamd itself, such as L or Л.

A lowercase lambda is widely used in scientific notation. Lambda denotes the wavelength, the decay constant, the specific heat of melting, the charge density, and many other variables. λ-probe — a sensor of residual oxygen in exhaust gases. λ-phage is the name of one of the bacteriophages.

The symbol “Greek Small Letter Lamda” is included in the “Letters” subblock of the “Greek and Coptic” block and was approved as part of Unicode version 1.1 in 1993.
