The Moon makes a full circle around the Earth in 29.5 days. Depending on its position, it is seen differently from our planet. If the Moon is somewhere between the Sun and the Earth, it is almost invisible. This phenomenon is called the new moon, and that's what this emoji depicts. This symbol comes in handy for lunar calendars.
The symbol “New Moon” is included in the “Moon, sun, and star symbols” subblock of the “Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs” block and was approved as part of Unicode version 6.0 in 2010. In 2015, it was also approved as an Emoji in version 1.0 and added to the “Sky & Weather” subcategory of the “Travel & Places” category.
