This Privacy Policy explains how the SYMBL for Chrome extension (the “Extension”) processes data. The Extension is provided by the SYMBL team (“SYMBL”, “we”, “us”).
What the Extension does
The Extension lets users search for Unicode symbols and emoji, copy them to the clipboard, keep a local list of recent symbols, and compose text in a toolbar popup. It does not modify the content of websites and does not require a user account or payment.
Search queries processed by SYMBL
When you use search, the Extension sends the following data to servers operated by SYMBL:
- the search query entered in the Extension;
- the selected search language;
- technical parameters required to return search results, such as the requested result limit;
- a temporary technical API access token used to authorize the request.
SYMBL uses search queries to return search results, generate aggregated search statistics, identify searches with no relevant results, and improve search relevance.
Individual search-query records are stored for up to 90 days. Stored query records are not associated with a user account, Chrome profile, persistent client ID, IP address, User-Agent, or API access token. After 90 days, individual query records are deleted. SYMBL may retain aggregated statistics derived from search queries for a longer period when those statistics do not contain individual search-event records or technical identifiers.
A search query may itself contain personal information if a user enters such information into the search field. SYMBL does not ask users to enter names, email addresses, phone numbers, account details, or other personal information in search queries.
Recent symbols and language updates
The Extension keeps a list of recent symbols locally on the user’s device. When the interface language changes, the Extension may send the identifiers of those recent symbols and the selected language to SYMBL servers to retrieve localized symbol names. This request is not used to create a server-side copy history or a user profile.
To load Unicode collections and emoji groups, the Extension may send the selected interface language and the identifier of the requested collection or content group to SYMBL servers. This data is used only to return the requested content and operate the Extension.
The Extension does not transmit copy-to-clipboard events or the contents of the built-in text field for analytics.
Data stored locally
The Extension stores the following data on the user’s device:
- up to 1,000 recent symbols, including their character or code, display value, and name;
- the language used for the names of recent symbols;
- the last search query;
- the last opened section of the Extension, which may include a search query in the local route;
- the selected interface language;
- the selected interface theme (system, light, or dark);
- text entered in the built-in text field;
- whether the built-in text field was initially opened;
- counters and status used to decide when and how often to show the review prompt, including the number of copy actions, the next display threshold, the number of times the prompt was postponed, and whether the prompt flow has been completed;
- a temporary technical API access token and its expiration time.
This local data is used to restore the Extension’s interface, recent symbols, settings, search state, and text between sessions. Local data remains on the device until it is replaced, cleared through the Extension where a clearing function is available, or removed when the Extension is uninstalled. The technical API access token expires according to the expiration time provided by the SYMBL API.
The review-prompt counters do not contain the copied symbols or text. The Extension does not receive or store the rating or review a user may submit in the Chrome Web Store. Selecting the review link opens the Chrome Web Store in a new tab.
The text stored in the built-in text field is not sent to SYMBL servers. A search query stored locally is sent to SYMBL only when the Extension performs a search. Identifiers for recent symbols may be sent only as described in the “Recent symbols and language updates” section.
Analytics
The Extension does not use Google Analytics or another third-party analytics service. It does not create or store a persistent analytics client ID. Search statistics are processed only on SYMBL infrastructure for the purposes described in this Policy.
SYMBL does not use Extension data for advertising, personalized advertising, creditworthiness assessment, or user profiling.
Technical server logs
SYMBL servers may process standard technical logs for security, abuse prevention, error diagnosis, and service reliability. These logs may include the request time, requested API endpoint, IP address, User-Agent, and response status. Technical logs are not used to build a search history or advertising profile and are not linked to stored search-query records.
Data we do not collect
The Extension does not collect user account credentials, payment information, precise location, browsing history, or the content of websites visited by the user. It does not read the user’s clipboard or collect text entered outside the Extension.
The temporary API access token used by the Extension is a technical credential for the SYMBL search API. It is not a user account credential and is not used to identify a user.
Data sharing
SYMBL does not sell Extension data. We do not share search queries with advertising platforms, data brokers, or other parties for their own purposes.
We may use service providers to host or operate SYMBL infrastructure. Such providers may process data only on our behalf, under appropriate contractual and security obligations, and only as needed to provide and protect the Extension’s functionality. We may also disclose data when required by applicable law or when necessary to protect the Extension, SYMBL, or users from fraud, abuse, or security threats.
Security and access
Data transmitted between the Extension and SYMBL servers is sent over HTTPS. Individual search-query records are processed by systems used to operate and improve search. Personnel do not routinely review individual queries. Access to individual records is restricted to cases where it is necessary for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, or handling a specific user request. Product analysis uses aggregated data. Individual search queries are not used to create profiles of users.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data processed by the Extension is used only to provide, maintain, secure, and improve the Extension’s disclosed functionality.
Children’s privacy
The Extension is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 in the United States or under the applicable age of digital consent in the EEA or United Kingdom. If we learn that a child has submitted personal information through the Extension, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
Your choices
You can clear recent symbols and the contents of the built-in text field through the Extension. You can stop the Extension from processing new search queries by not using search, disabling the Extension, or uninstalling it. Uninstalling the Extension removes its locally stored data from Chrome.
Because stored search queries are not associated with an account or persistent identifier, we may not be able to identify a particular query as belonging to a specific user. If you believe that you entered personal information in a search query, contact us with the relevant details and we will review the request where reasonably possible.
