The history of the word “cross” is complicated; it appears to have entered English from Old Irish, possibly via Old Norse, ultimately from the Latin “crux” that meant “gallow, tree, execute tool”. Now the cross of Christ is the main symbol of Christian religion, the symbol of Christ's resurrection, of His victory over death. This cross is a symbol of the sacrificial love of God towards people.

In addition to the eight-pointed cross, the Orthodox Church uses two other common crosses: a six-pointed cross (without the highest line) and a four-pointed one (without the lowest inclined line). However, in Unicode the eight-pointed cross is called Orthodox.
