Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It's a time to honor gods, ancestors, and to have a feast with your family 🍽. Sure, feast again.
This holiday lasts for two weeks (wow, that's a lot!), and all its customs and traditions seem to be very conventional and common for all New Years: saying goodbye to the past year and welcoming the new year, which promises to bring luck, joy and prosperity 🍊
In 2022 the date fell on February 1, 2022, beginning a year of the Tiger 🐅.
Chinese New Year features 🐲
Here we've gathered the most common traditions that will help you distinguish Chinese New Year:
- decorate your house with red stuff🎈, don't shy away from lots of red lanterns, as this colour symbolizes energy and scares away bad spirits.
- offer sacrifices to ancestors, this one looks a bit like the Day of the Dead tradition: you need to stay in touch with your ancestors, so don't forget to treat them with food via special dinner table.
- firecrackers! more firecrackers!🧨, as fire is also red, obviously, and it's associated with dragons.
- family reunions are very common, as during any traditional holiday, which is good for bonding and preserving customs.
- last but not least (and truly original) — red envelopes as gifts🧧, which contain money! they're often given to seniors and kids to wish a peaceful year.
